Gardaí continue to trawl through thousands of hours of CCTV and social media footage in an attempt to identify rioters who took part in the violent events in Dublin city centre on Thursday night.

The riots erupted after a knife attack on three children and their care assistant outside Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire on Parnell Square East at lunchtime on Thursday.

Hundreds of rioters looted and damaged shops and set fire to garda cars, buses, fire engines, and Luas trams in what has been described as “mayhem” in the city centre.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee confirmed that gardaí arrested 48 people between Thursday and Saturday, although only 34 of these were directly related to the rioting. The remainder were arrested on public order offences between Friday and Saturday.

She previously stated that officers are trawling 6,000 hours of CCTV footage and vowed that further arrests would follow the 34 already made.

Gardaí today confirmed that an incident room has been set up to examine the footage with a Senior Investigating Officer appointed to lead the investigation.

A spokesperson said: “An Garda Síochána continue a criminal investigation into all of the circumstances of the Violent Disorder and Public Order events that occurred on Thursday, 23rd November 2023.

“An incident room has been established at Store Street Garda Station and a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed.

“An Garda Síochána wishes to acknowledge the significant volume of support received from the public to date including calls to Store Street Garda Station, the Garda Confidential Phone Number and receipt of images and videos from members of the Public.”

Investigating gardaí are requesting that those who were in Dublin city centre at the time of the riots and may have video footage or images contact the team at Store Street Garda Station via email at store.street.public@garda.ie along with their contact details only.

The spokesperson added that the public are not requested to submit any footage at this time as investigators will later arrange for the collection of any video footage.

“An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to any person with any information on the events on Thursday evening or has any information on persons organising or involved in Thursday’s events to contact the garda investigation team.

“The garda investigation team can also be contacted at Store Street Garda Station at 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.”
