Shocking footage has emerged that shows a hooded and masked man using a hatchet to smash up a car in a packed town centre on a busy Saturday night.

The attack took place in the Kennedy Road car park in Navan, Co Meath close to the local Garda station, last weekend as hundreds of people socialised in the area.

A source told the Sunday World: “It was an opportune attack, there is a mini drugs feud going on at the moment and this lad spotted a rivals car parked up and started his one man demolition job on it.

“At the moment the feud is low key and minor but behaviour like this will only make things worse.”

Local councillor Tommy Reilly, chair of Meath County Council, slammed the incident.

"The real worrying thing is this fellow had the hatchet on him, who carries something like that with them on a night out unless they are either ready to cause trouble or expecting to be attacked.

“Look people will ask where the guards were, the station is less then 500 metres away, but the problem is not that they are not doing their job but that there are not enough of them, the station is seriously undermanned and nothing is being done about it.”

A garda spokesman confirmed an investigation is underway.
